Frequently Asked Questions

How are your backdrops created?

In addition to our hand painted canvas backdrops, each printed and digital backdrop is meticulously crafted using images from my own personal photography archive, and digitally manipulated to create the unique scenes you see. Each backdrop can take several hours to create, ensuring the optimal composition and tones to compliment a variety of subjects. To learn more about the backdrop creation process, visit the About Us section.

Why limited editions?

The Backdrop Studio provides you with (almost) one of a kind products to incorporate into your own artwork. To ensure that these backdrops retain their unique quality, we’ve decided to limit the quantity of printed backdrops produced. The exclusive nature of our products, combined with your own unique aesthetics, will ensure that your images will never venture too close to that of any other artist.

How often do you release new collections?

In order to keep providing unique high quality products to customers, we will endeavor to release new or seasonal collections on a quarterly basis. If you would like to be kept in the loop on any new product launches, please sign up for our newsletter to be notified!

The backdrop I want is sold out—is there any way I can get one?

Unfortunately that would defeat the purpose of a limited edition! However, some backdrops are part of a seasonal collection that will be made available the following season, so please check back in with us or sign up for our newsletter to be informed about when it becomes available again.

If you have your heart set on a certain backdrop, we can always work with you to design something similar! Please visit our Commissions page to learn more about commissioning a custom backdrop.

Can I use my digital backdrop for commercial work?

Digital backdrops may only be used for personal and private client work. If you would like to use your backdrop for commercial work, please send an email to kate@thebackdropstudio.com for commercial licensing options. Printed and hand painted backdrops may be used for commercial work.

What materials do you use for your backdrops?

For our hand painted backdrops we use a #12 (11.5 oz) cotton canvas for maximum durability and longevity. This canvas is also commonly used for artist’s canvas, to give you that authentic painterly look and feel. The paint we use is a water based acrylic paint. Our canvas backdrops are not pre-primed or gessoed.

We’ve sourced a premium quality blackout fabric material for our printed backdrops. This product is completely opaque, washable and glare free. It’s also light weight and wrinkle resistant, which makes traveling with your printed backdrop easy and efficient!

Digital backdrops are delivered upon purchase as high resolution JPG images.

How do I care for my backdrop?

All backdrops should ideally be rolled on a rigid tube and stored upright to avoid wrinkling, creasing or sagging. If your canvas or fabric backdrop becomes wrinkled or creased, hang the backdrop and steam with a hand steamer until wrinkles are released.

If you find that the wrinkles are more persistent on your backdrop, you can iron your backdrop on low heat to release the creases. We strongly recommend ironing only the BACK side of the backdrop, as direct heat may cause damage to the paint or pigment on the front side of the canvas.

Can you make custom backdrops?

Yes we can! Our hand painted canvas backdrops can be made to order per customer specifications—just shoot us an email with your preferred color and backdrop texture and we can match to the best of our ability. Note that there will always be some variation in bespoke backdrops and we cannot guarantee an exact match to any reference imagery. There is a small fee of $35 for custom canvas backdrops.

If you are looking for a custom digital or printed backdrop and can’t find what you’re looking for in one of our collections, we would love to discuss a commissioned piece with you! Send an email to kate@thebackdropstudio.com with your specifications and we will work with you to try and accommodate your needs.

Can I return a backdrop?

Unfortunately we cannot accept returns unless the backdrop is damaged in transit. If you see signs of damage when you receive your backdrop, please notify us via email within 24 hours to allow us to file a claim with our shipping provider. If your backdrop is damaged, we will happily replace it with a new backdrop for no additional cost, or return your money in its entirety.

Digital backdrop sales are final and cannot be refunded.

Do you rent backdrops?

Due to shipping costs, backdrops rentals (unless in the local Portland, OR area) are generally not economical. However, if you have need of a rental and we have an item in stock, we may be able to evaluate on a case by case basis. Limited edition backdrops are not currently available for rentals.
